The application timeline for a Commonwealth Scholarship depends on the specific type of scholarship you are applying for. The process begins a full year before your intended study date.
The application windows follow a strict annual schedule:

1. Commonwealth Master's and PhD Scholarships (Agency/NGO Route)
This is the main, traditional route, where you would need to be nominated by your home country's National Nominating Agency (e.g., the Federal Scholarship Board in Nigeria) or an approved NGO.
  • Applications Open: Early September
  • Applications Close: Mid-to-late October
  • National Interviews: Late November to December (depending on your country's local board).
  • Note: If you plan to start your studies in September/October 2028, your application window will open in September 2027.
2. Commonwealth Shared Scholarships (University Route)
These are master's scholarships jointly funded by the UK government and participating UK universities. You do not need a national nomination for this route; instead, you apply through the university.
  • Applications Open: Early November
  • Applications Close: Mid-December
3. Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships (QECS)
For students looking to study a master's degree in a lower- or middle-income Commonwealth country other than the UK (such as South Africa, Fiji, or Sri Lanka). It has two application cycles annually:
  • Cycle 1 Opens: November / December
  • Cycle 2 Opens: March / April

⏳ Ideal Preparation Timeline
Because the application window is so short (usually around 4–6 weeks), successful applicants follow this year-round preparation strategy:
  • January – June: Research and identify three eligible UK university courses. Write your essays and prepare your research or development impact statements.
  • July – August: Apply for admission directly to your selected UK universities. You are expected to reach out to your university professors or employers to secure two strong reference letters.
  • September: The portal opens. Fill out the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) Portal and submit everything before the October deadline.
